Systemic candida overgrowth is a problem which today affects more people than not at some point in their lives. The symptoms can include anything from mild, annoying maladies to severe, chronic fatigue on the more serious end of the spectrum. No matter where you lie on the candida spectrum, it becomes no less important to treat the overgrowth now before it becomes an even greater problem down the road.
First, it is important that we understand the wide range of symptoms which could be caused either wholly or partially by candida yeast overgrowth. When I happen to get on the subject of candida overgrowth when speaking with others in the industry, many simply cannot understand how such a wide, seemingly unrelated variety of symptoms could be caused by an excess of candida in the body. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: fatigue, head aches, skin problems, anxiety, insomnia, cravings for sweets, body odor, alcohol intolerance, low body temperature and many others. The list of symptoms is basically never-ending!
Okay, I know what you're asking now. How can we bring the overgrowth under control? First, you have to understand that you will never completely eliminate candida from your body. It would not be feasible or healthy to do so. Your aim should be to eliminate the candida from areas where it shouldn't be, which is basically any place other than the intestines and colon. That means that we need to eliminate candida from the blood stream, organs and brain. I am not going to lie to you, this is not going to be an easy task. Persevere, and the rewards will be great.
In order to successfully eliminate candida, you should first eliminate all sources of refined sugar and flour from your diet. This means all cakes, cookies, breads and candies should be eliminated since they all feed candida and ensure that it will continue to thrive in your body. This is usually the hardest step for a person to do, since those infected with candida yeast generally have insatiable appetites for sugars and carbs. Some will even go as far as to say that all fruit should also be eliminated, although I disagree here. Since sugar in itself is addicting, a person should go about slowly removing sugar from the diet. Slowly weaning yourself from sugar will help to ensure that withdrawal is kept at a minimum. For more information on candida diets and what should be eliminated, a Google search will bring plenty of results.
Once you have cleaned up your diet, the next step is to take anti-fungal supplements. There are many anti-fungals to choose from. Some of the better ones are: grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, pau d'arco, coconut oil and garlic. Choose one of the listed anti-fugals and take it daily for 2-3 weeks. After 2-3 weeks, discontinue the anti-fungal that you're taking and start another one. Alternating your anti-fungals ensures that the yeast does not become immune to the effects of any particular anti-fungal.
In addition to taking an anti-fungal supplement, you will also want to get on a high-potency probiotic. Even better yet, make your own fermented foods such as kefir or sauerkraut. Whichever method you choose, make sure that you dose yourself several times per day with as much good bacteria as you can. Make sure that you take your doses of probiotics and anti-fungals several hours apart.
There you have it, how to cure yourself of systemic candida overgrowth in a nutshell. There is so much more useful information on this topic and I encourage to read as much on this subject as you can.
Cheers,
Shane

Acid Reflux - The Misunderstood "Disease."
![]() |
| You know the feeling! |
By Shane
Today I am going to talk about the greatly misunderstood digestive disorder known as "Acid Reflux." Why do so many people today suffer from this uncomfortable digestive issue, and what can they do to remedy the situation? Obviously, one must first understand the REAL cause of acid reflux if they intend to remedy the situation.
The real cause of acid reflux will probably come as a surprise to you at first. At the moment, you or someone you know is probably taking an acid-blocking drug in order to relieve acid reflux symptoms because you have been conviced that the disease is caused by too much acid being produced. The problem with this approach is that most people experience acid reflux due to the fact that they DON'T PRODUCE ENOUGH ACID. That's right!
When enough acid is not produced from the start and you proceed to consume food, your stomach panics and secretes an overabundance of acid in order to compensate for not having enough to begin with. This excess of acid which is released all at once causes the pain and discomfort that the person experiences during an acid relfux episode.
So logic would tell us that in order to avoid an episode of acid reflux, we must ensure that we have ample stomach acid available in the BEGINNING of the meal so as to ensure that the panic message is not sent out along with the ensuing rush of acid. You can achieve this through several different ends, although the basic "cure" will be the same regardless. You have to supplement with one of several forms of acid RIGHT BEFORE you begin eating. You can achieve this through using either apple cider vinegar (2 tsp in 8 ounces of water) or Betaine HCL (1-2 caps) before your meals.
Now there is one other thing which you must do in order to fully rectify the problem. You must discontinue the acid-blocking drug that you are on since it is further decreasing stomach acid production in an already acid-starved environment. You can see now that it makes no sense to take an acid-blocking drug when you already are not producing enough!
Remedying acid reflux really is that simple. Just pick your medicine (apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride caps) and take it before each meal. You will see a great improvement in your symptoms with your very first meal, although it will take a while to experience complete relief since retraining your stomach to produce its own acid takes time. The saying "patience is a virtue" certainly applies here. Please check out my other great health articles by clicking on the links in the upper-right hand corner of this page!

Adrenal Fatigue - The 21st Century Epidemic.
By Shane
Are you constantly tired, easily fatigued and cranky? Do you become hypoglycemic and light-headed when you go for too long without food? Does it take you 10-20 minutes to gain the willpower in order to leave the comfort of your bed each morning upon waking? If these symptoms sound familiar, you likely suffer from a condition known as adrenal fatigue, or adrenal insufficiency. It is my firm belief that EVERYONE living in today's World suffers from some degree of adrenal fatigue. That's right! I said EVERYONE! Read further in order to become better informed.
In order to appreciate the importance of proper adrenal gland function, we must first understand the multitude of actions which our adrenals perform in our bodies on a daily basis. Our adrenals produce a cascade of hormones which carry out varying functions in our bodies. Some of the more important hormones which are produced by the adrenal glands are cortisol, dhea and cortisone. When adequate production of these hormones decline, we start to suffer from all sorts of health maladies which are generally wrongly attributed to other causes.
I like to the call the adrenals "The Forgotten Glands" because adrenal fatigue is never diagnosed by conventional doctors. This is a shame since failure to treat the fatigued adrenals directly will lead to a incomplete recovery from most maladies. There are many important functions in the body which decline if your adrenals become fatigued.
Unbeknown to most is the fact that most cases of diabetes are actually caused by weak adrenal function. That's right. A weak pancreas is not the number one cause of diabetes, weak adrenals are. How does this happen? First, severe adrenal depletion through improper living leads to a decline in the production of the essential hormone cortisol. Cortisol is needed in proper levels in order to keep blood sugar levels from dropping too low. When cortisol production decreases as adrenal function diminishes over time, an individual experiences a drop in blood sugar, also called hypoglycemia. When a person experiences hypoglycemia, they consume an abundance of refined carbs and sugar in order to provide a quick boost in blood sugar levels. The blood sugar stays up for 30-45 minutes, only to be followed by a quick drop back down to hypoglycemic levels. You see where I'm going with this? This hypoglycemic condition is a never-ending cycle that keeps on repeating itself until preventative action is taken.
"Hypoglycemia" is nothing more than a fancy medical term for pre-diabetes. As an individual continues to satisfy his or her low blood sugar episodes with refined sugars and carbs, more and more insulin is secreted by the pancreas in order to clear the excess glucose from the blood stream. As time goes on, the insulin receptor cells in our bodies become less sensitive to the effects of insulin, hence the medical term, "Insulin Resistance." The human body makes up for this desensitizing of insulin by ordering the pancreas to produce even more insulin. Over time, the pancreas weakens and the over-abundance of insulin becomes so ineffective at doing its job that blood sugar levels stay high at all times, even after several hours of fasting. All of this is precipitated by a reduction in the adrenal hormone cortisol!
Another major overlooked symptom of adrenal gland exhaustion is hypothyroidism. The adrenal glands and thyroid glands are both interdependant on one another when it comes to proper functioning. When you adrenal function declines, your thyroid function will also take a hit. For many individuals, adrenal insufficiency will be THE PRIMARY cause of their hypothyroidism. Such individuals could take all of the synthroid and synthetic thyroid hormone supplements that they want and still suffer from hypothyroidism. In these cases, only treating the adrenal glands themselves will lead to a complete recovery of the hypothyroid condition. One tell-tale sign of adrenal fatigue which often occurs in many who are receiving external hormone replacement therapies is a racing heart beat or heart palpitations. If you are currently being treated with with either Synthroid or Armour Thyroid and experience such heart symptoms, you can count on the fact that you have an underlying adrenal insufficiency. Treat the source, not the symptoms!
In my next article, I will talk about how our thyroid glands become fatigued to begin with, and how we can improve adrenal function through the use of smart supplementation and diet. If you have not already done so, please read the two articles I wrote about Hypothyroidism and what you can do to improve the function of your Thyroid Naturally. Stay Tuned!

Hypothyroidism, A Modern-Day World Epidemic
By Shane
Hypothyroidism is today an epidemic. Many estimates today state that hypothyroidism affects up to 85% of women and and 70% of men. Rates of Hypothyroidism have more than doubled in the last century! Now an academic would look at these alarming figures and ask themselves "Why is this increase happening?" That is the question that I am going to set out to answer here in this article.
There have been many changes in American living which have contributed to the hypothyroid epidemic, but none more than the dramatic increase in exposure to toxic substances which has occured in the last half century. We have sodium fluoride added to our municipal water supplies against our will. Mercury amalgam fillings are still used in peoples mouths. Artificial sweetener use is at an all-time high. Not to mention that many Americans still do not realize the toxic effects that pesticides from inorganic produce have on our thyroids. What do all of these pollutants have in common you ask? They all block the proper utilization of Iodine and other essential minerals by the thyroid gland!
Of particular concern is the negative effects that a group of chemicals known as "halogens" have on iodine uptake by the thyroid gland. The major halogens which we NEED to avoid if we ever want to free ourselves of hypothyroidism are fluoride, bromine and chlorine. The three aforementioned substances are toxic as they block iodine uptake by the thyroid. Don't get it? Let me clarify further...
The human thyroid gland has what are called "iodine receptors." The job of these iodine receptors is to uptake dietary iodine so that the thyroid gland can produce thyroid hormone (t4 and t3) from the iodine. Iodine is THE raw material used by your thyroid gland to produce these important hormones, among other things. When you ingest too many toxic halogens (fluoride, chlorine, bromine) your iodine receptors become clogged with these halogens and iodine cannot be efficiently used by your thyroid! No iodine reaching the receptors equals no thyroid hormone production.
What does this tell us? It tells us that we need to live as cleanly as possible if we are ever going to solve the hypothyroid epidemic. In order to know how to avoid these toxic halogens, we must first know where they are present.
We are exposed to Fluoride mainly through...
-drinking tap water
-showering in tap water (your skin absorbs anything that touches it!)
- brushing with fluoride tooth paste.
We are exposed to Bromine mainly through...
-Contact with fire retardants used in carpeting and furniture
-household cleaning products
-flour used for cooking bread and pastries
So in order to avoid these nasty chemicals, we must use our common sense. If you would not eat a specific substance, you should not be applying it to your skin. Avoid the above listed sources as much as possible. Now that I have talked a bit about why we are facing hypothyroidism today in epidemic proportions, I am going to talk about supplementary measures which are critical to take in order to normalize thyroid function in my next article. You can find this article by clicking here. In addition, you should also read my article on Adrenal Fatigue/Insufficiency since sub-par adrenal function is also a major cause of hypothyroidism.

Optimize Thyroid Function with Supplements.
By Shane
In my previous article on the hypothyroid epidemic, I talked about why hypothyroidism is so prevalent today in society. If you have not read the article yet, I suggest that you read it first by clicking here. In addition, I suggest that you also read my article on Adrenal Fatigue / Insufficiency since adrenal problems many times will precipitate hypothyroidism. After you have read this article you should try and take measures to avoid the talked about thyroid toxins at all costs. Once you have taken this first, very important step I suggest that you begin adding the supplements which will follow in this article.
I like to think of solving thyroid insufficiency as a two part equation. The equation goes like this:
AVOIDANCE of toxins + SUPPLEMENTATION of thyroid nutrients = Normal Thyroid Function.
It is really that simple.
By far and large the most important nutrient for proper thyroid function is iodine. When it comes to iodine supplementation, you must completely disregard what you already know and start from scratch. Chances are you have been taught that we only need 150 micrograms (.15 milligrams) of iodine each day. This is misinformation and could not be further from the truth. Evidence is piling up from iodine literate doctors such as Dr. David Brownstein which shows that the human body needs a MINIMUM of 12.5 milligrams of iodine daily in order to prevent deficiency. Take the Japanese, for example. In Japan, the average person consumes about 13 milligrams of iodine each day from a seafood-rich diet. Consequently, incidences of prostate and breast cancer as well as hypothyroidism are much lower in Japan than they are in the Western World. If you want to start optimizing your thyroid function today, you must start incorporating this essential nutrient into your supplement regimen. The best form of Iodine to use for supplementation is either Lugol's liquid iodine or Iodoral tablets. Either one will work fine, it just comes down to whether you prefer taking iodine as a tablet or liquid. See dosing of supplements below to learn how much to take.
While iodine is the most important supplement to take for thyroid optimization, it should also be taken with other "companion" nutrients which work together in concert. Of these companion nutrients, none other is more important than selenium. Without the aid of selenium, you body cannot convert inactive thyroid hormone (t4) into active thyroid hormone (t3). The active thyroid hormone t3 must be produced at adequate levels in order to correct thyroid imbalances. Without adequate selenium, this essential conversion will not be possible.
Knowing this, it is not hard to see why Synthroid and other such drugs are many times ineffective when it comes to alleviating hypothyroid symptoms. You see, while synthroid supplies your body with inactive t4 (in synthetic form) it fails to provide the body with active t3. This fact makes makes supplementation with Armour and other forms of dessicated thyroid a better option since these do contain the t3 that the body needs for normal thyroid function.
After selenium, I would say that tyrosine would be next on the list of overall importance. When supplementation with an adequate amount of both iodine and selenium for several months does not bring thyroid function to normal, tyrosine can be added and will many times be the missing "spark" that is needed. Tyrosine (along with iodine) is a major ingredient used by the thyroid gland to produce thryoid hormone. When you consume a healthy diet with adequate protein, tyrosine deficiency is rare and generally not needed. Supplementation can, however, have utility for certain individuals and so its use should not be discounted.
Beyond those supplements which I just mentioned, I also recommend that you take a high quality multivitamin/mineral supplement in order to ensure that all other essential vitamins and minerals are covered. Sadly, our diets today are largely devoid of nutrients (especially minerals). Therefore, taking a good multivitamin is cheap insurance.
So to summarize, to optimize thyroid gland function you should be taking the following supplements daily:
1) Iodine- 12.5 - 50 milligrams daily in the form of Lugol's liquid or Iodoral tablets.
2) Selenium- 200 micrograms daily in selenomethionine form.
3) Tyrosine- If extra support is needed, take 500 milligrams morning and afternoon.
4) Multivitamin- As directed on the label.
Take the aforementioned measures and I can assure you that you will experience some improvement in your thyroid function. Just remember to be patient and stick with it. It takes many people 3 months or more to see significant improvements. Rome was not built overnight. Stay tuned for my next article "Synthroid, Armour and Drug Alternatives" which will be coming soon!
